What is a 401k?
The average American today cannot expect to retire on Social Security alone. This is the point Allen Greenspan was trying to promote in his address to the country. Instead Americans must look for alternative solutions when planning their retirement. The 401k plan is the option most employees are choosing when it comes to saving for their retirement. In fact, according to the PCSA (Profit Sharing/ 401k Council of America), Americans have more than 1.5 trillion dollars invested in 401k plans.

What is a 401k Plan?
A 401k plan enables employees to save for their own retirement. This plan is named for section 401k of the Internal Revenue Code, which permits employees of qualifying companies to set aside tax-deferred funds with each paycheck. The plan also provides employees with a tremendous amount of flexibility - allowing the employee to regularly change the amount of money they wish to contribute to their plan, and giving them plenty of options to choose from in investing their savings over time. This makes a 401k plan different from a regular pension plan because it does not specify from the onset how much money an employee will receive after retirement.

What is the Eligibility for a 401k Retirement Fund?

Must be over the age of 21.

The employee decides how much money to enter into the plan, which makes the employee responsible for his or her own future.

Employers may provide "matching funds," meaning the employer puts in a percentage of what you have already added to your 401(k) plan.
